Sari Noga in Parkers Prairie Fall Festival Parade

Noon, Sunday, August 5

The Fast Break Club, the booster club for Gopher women's basketball, will travel to Parkers Prairie on Sunday, August 5, to participate in their annual Fall Festival parade. Fast Break Club volunteers will join Parkers Prairie native Sari Noga in the parade. Noga will be a junior guard with the Gophers this season.

The parade starts at noon and travels along Otter Avenue (Highway 29) in Parkers Prairie. Fast Break Club volunteers will have non-conference schedules, candy and other goodies to pass out to parade goers. The parade draws a few thousand folks and often contains 100 units.
We'd love to see Gopher supporters along the parade route wearing Maroon and Gold!

Northwest Minnesota Birding Report- Thursday, July 19, 2012

This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 19, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

It has been a very hot week here in the northwest, though I hear not as hot as in the southern part of the state. Birds have been very active, especially at the bird bath.

On July 18, Gary and Marion Otnes found a RUFF in Otter Tail County in the Mistinka backwaters. Directions are south on CR 1 from Fergus Falls to the intersection with 170th Ave where there were flooded fields ahead. Several species of shorebirds were there including one RUFF with a dark brown ruff. I do not know if the bird or the flooded fields are still there, although this was only yesterday.

Mark Otnes discovered BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS at Dunton Locks County Park in Becker County on July 13. The birds were in the tram area and around the picnic shelter.

In Clay County, Dennis Weisenborn found BLUE GROSBEAKS northeast of Glyndon near the intersection of 70th Ave N and 180th St . The birds were found two weeks ago, but were still there singing on July 14th. Other species in the area included EASTERN BLUEBIRDLARK SPARROW, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

Sandy Aubol reported DICKCISSELS at the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds in Polk County on July 13. EARED GREBES and BLACK TERNS were also there.

A single DICKCISSEL  was singing from a round bale in an alfalfa field near the intersection of CR 7 and MN 32 in Pennington County on July 14.

Heidi Hughes found ten DICKCISSELS at the Agassiz Valley impoundment in Marshall and Polk County on July 14. More than 100 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were also there, and SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen on the grasslands nearby.

Thanks to Dennis Weisenborn, Gary and Marion Otnes, Mark Otnes, and Sandy Aubol for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@mncable.net OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, July 26, 2012

In Norman County, Randy Frederickson discovered several HENSLOW'S SPARROWS this week. One of them was at the following location: seven miles east of Borup on CR 39, then north 2 miles to the intersection of 330th St and 140th Ave, and east 0.3 miles. The bird was on the north side of the road.

In Red Lake County on June 25, Ron Erpelding found a WESTERN GREBE on the Red Lake Falls wastewater treatment ponds, and two DICKCISSELS on the south side of CR 1 just east of CR 23.

Ashley Hitt at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County heard a LEAST BITTERN on the refuge on June 27.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported LEAST BITTERN, AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, LONG-EARED OWL with an owlet, and over twenty WHIP-POOR-WILLS on June 23. Ron Erpelding was in the county on June 25 and 26 where he found several SHARP-TAILED GROUSE with broods, several LEAST BITTERNS, two of which were along the Tombstone Highway( CR 51) east of US 59. A WHIP-POOR-WILLS was heard on the south side of the Tombstone Highway 3 miles east of US 59.

Bill Blackburn, reporting from Lake of the Woods County on June 26, observed a GREAT GRAY OWL and BOREAL CHICKADEES on the Pitt Grade, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on the Hogsback trail,  and SPRUCE GROUSE in the Beltrami Island State Forest. On CR 3, he found a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.

Thanks to Ashley Hitt, Bill Blackburn, Jesse Ellis, Larry Wilebski, Randy Frederickson, Ron Erpelding,  and Sandy Aubol for their reports.
