Minnesota Fishing Report

Detroit Lakes
Ice conditions in the Detroit Lakes area are excellent, and range from 15-18 inches on most lakes. Travel is easy using ATV, snowmobile or vehicle. Mild weather this week has kept the bite stable and consistent. This Saturday's cold front and weather change could make the bite more challenging. At this time, the evening bite from about 4:00-5:30 p.m. has been best. Walleye are still relating to the sharp breaks and depths of 18-26 feet of water. For the most fish, use jigs and spoons with minnows or minnow heads on one line, and shiners or suckers under a bobber or tip-up on the second line. Perch are relating to similar structure, but prefer a slightly smaller presentation. This week, anglers seem to be chasing crappies and sunnies. Sunfish are still relating to shallow weeds, and the larger crappies have been suspended over deeper water such as depths of 20-35 feet. Northern pike action has been best on the outside edges of the weeds, with large suckers getting the most hits. The majority of fish are taken on tip-ups. All area lakes seem to be attracting a lot of anglers, more anglers than seen in years!
