Minnesota Fishing Report

Detroit Lakes
Area Ice conditions are excellent, with ice thickness ranging from 18-21 inches on most Detroit Lakes area lakes. Travel has been trouble-free when using an ATV, snowmobile or vehicle. Mild weather this week has kept the bite stable and consistent. An approaching cold front could make the bite more of a challenge, however below-zero temperatures will add up to an inch of ice a day. The evening bite remains the best time to be on the ice. Walleye anglers are having the most success when fishing either the sharp breaks or depths of 18-26 feet of water using jigs/spoons with minnows or minnow heads, and shiners or suckers on the bobber rods or tip-ups. Perch are relating to similar structure, responding best to a slightly downsized presentation. Sunnies can still be found at the shallow weeds. The larger crappies can be found suspended over depths of 25-35 feet, hitting bugs emerging from the basin mud. Northern pike anglers are finding the most action on the outside edges of weeds when using large suckers. Most are coming in on tip-ups. Most area lakes are speckled with fish houses, more than seen in years!
