You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

It truly feels like spring the last few days as we have had mild temperatures and dense fog. It has discouraged folks from going birding, at least the last couple of days as one can barely see the next light pole sometimes. Tomorrow it promised to cool off a little and the sun to come out.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County observed a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK which caught a bird that flew into their windows in Lancaster. A NORTHERN CARDINAL still comes to the feeder at his cabin northwest of Lancaster.

Lynda Knutsen at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County reported on February 2 that among the usual feeder birds was a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, and COMMON REDPOLLS. It is causing some migrants to linger and we hope they won't get caught by the inevitable quick cool down that will surely come. Many snowy owls are being reported , and the news is not good about the ones that are being found dead as many are severely emaciated. It takes the bloom off the joy of the sightings that folks are getting.

A SNOWY OWL was sighted by Teresa Jaskiewicz in Otter Tail County on CR40 near I-29 on November 28. The birds seem to know ahead of us, and this week there are many reports of snow buntings and a few redpolls, two species that surely do foretell winter.

In Red Lake County, Anita Vettleson saw a WILD TURKEY at Plummer on October 26. I found two late FOX SPARROWS and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW near the Red Lake Falls wastewater treatment ponds on October 22. Migration has been fast and furious lately, and this was the week of the last sparrows I fear. White-throated sparrows appear to have nearly all gone through, and the Harris Sparrows are bringing up the rear. Ron Erpelding made a swing through the counties of the northwest last weekend , and he observed HARRIS'S SPARROWS in eight counties, DARK-EYED JUNCOS and TREE SPARROWS in many places, and FOX SPARROWS in three counties.

An AMERICAN PIPIT , RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and HARRIS'S SPARROWS were seen at Hamden Slough in Becker County on October 13.

At Glyndon WTP in Clay County, Ron Erpelding found CACKLING GOOSE, GREATER SCAUP, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 10 species of sparrow.

A surprise BARRED OWL was found at Twin Valley Community Park in Norman County on October 14. HARRIS'S SPARROWS were also found there.

Sandy Aubol reported a red-shafted NORTHERN FLICKER at East Grand Forks in Polk County on October 17. Also seen in her yard were 4 PINE SISKINS. A NORTHERN SHRIKE appeared on October 19. Ron Erpelding found a COMMON RAVEN in Polk County on October 14.

In Red Lake County, Ron Erpelding found CACKLING GOOSE, GREATER SCAUP, COMMON RAVEN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, AMERICAN PIPIT, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW on October 15.

Pennington County species seen on October 15 included CACKLING GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW. It wasn't far below freezing , but lots of gardens saw the growing season come to a screeching halt. Migration should pick up after this, once the current southwest wind switches around.

Larry Wilebski had a couple of interesting avian visitors this week in Kittson County. On September 9, an EASTERN TOWHEE and an immature NORTHERN CARDINAL showed up at his cabin northwest of Lancaster.

Here in our yard in Pennington County on September 10 I heard a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, and a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER and two male BALTIMORE ORIOLES came to the feeder. On September 11, a juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was spotted on a telephone pole across the road. Today, September 15, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD is still coming to the nectar.

In Polk County Sandy Aubol reported three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 8-10 NORTHERN FLICKERS, and two BALD EAGLES in the East Grand Forks area on September 12.

Thanks to Larry Wilebski and Sandy Aubol for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than Thursday each week, at ajjoppru@q.com OR call the Detroit Lakes Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Migration seems to be going strong, as every day we see the last of some species.

Beau Shroyer found 2 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in Becker County , in Calloway along US 59 on September 5. The north central part of the state is no longer so dry, so be wary if you want to drive on the township roads - your vehicle will not stay clean. Roads that tend to be marginal may not be all that good after last night's deluge during which some places received 3 or more inches of driving rain in a very short time.

Here in Pennington County on August 26, I found a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in the yard. On August 27, there was a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, CANADA WARBLER, and several ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. Tonight, I saw a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH working on a sunflower seed near the window.

In Red Lake County at Huot on August 27, about 20 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were flycatching in the early evening. Also seen in the woods nearby were EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST FLYCATCHER, CEDAR WAXWING, TENNESSEE WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

Shelley Steva was birding at the impoundment north of the Wetland, Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary on August 27. Hints of the autumn to come can be seen if you look hard enough. A few tired leaves are floating down mostly due to dry weather. After a long wet spring, summer has proved to be quite dry in the northwest, and we could use a shot of rain.

From Becker County, Steve Midthune reported a WILSON'S WARBLER at Dunton Locks Park in Detroit Lakes, Becker County on August 22. The chatter of young birds of most species is quieting as they mature into tough little flying machines ready to head to warmer climates for the winter. Fall flowers are in full bloom, and those in flower beds are getting tired already. Gardens are starting to bury us in produce and keep us busy trying not to waste any of the treasures.

Gary Otnes reported several bird sightings from Otter Tail and Wilkin Counties on August 12. Everything is starting to get that fall appearance, but rain has been frequent enough that all is very green still. Those who don't like yard work are awaiting that summer dormancy.
